Short answer: AEO (answer engine optimization) is the practice of making your content easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews to find, understand and quote. Where SEO aims for a top link, AEO aims to be the source the answer is built from.
Why AEO matters now
More and more people ask an assistant instead of scanning ten blue links. The assistant reads a handful of sources, writes one answer and cites a few of them. If your brand isn't one of those sources, you're invisible in that moment, even if you rank well in classic search.
The good news: the habits that earn AI citations are mostly the habits of good writing. Clear answers, real expertise, tidy structure and a presence in more than one format.
SEO vs AEO at a glance
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in search results | Be quoted or cited in an AI answer |
| Unit of content | The whole page | A self-contained passage that answers one question |
| Key signals | Relevance, links, page experience | Clarity, structure, authority, mentions across trusted sources |
| Where you measure | Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools | AI referral traffic and manual prompt checks |
Seven steps to get cited
1. Answer the question in the first two sentences
AI tools pull short, self-contained passages. Put a direct, quotable answer right under each heading, then expand. If someone read only that paragraph, they should have their answer.
2. Write headings as the questions people ask
Use the exact phrasing buyers type or speak: "How much does an explainer video cost?" beats "Pricing." Google's "People also ask" box, AnswerThePublic and your own sales calls are the best sources.
3. Add structured data
Schema markup (FAQPage, Article, VideoObject, Organization) tells machines what each part of the page is. It doesn't guarantee a citation, but it removes guesswork.
4. Let the right crawlers in
Check your robots.txt. OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot is the crawler used for ChatGPT search, and blocking it keeps you out of those answers. Allow the search crawlers of the assistants you want to appear in.
5. Turn every key answer into a video
Publish a YouTube version with a clear title, a full transcript, chapters and a link back to the article. Video results appear in Google, and transcripts give AI tools another source that points to you.
6. Show who wrote it and why they know
Named authors, bios, real examples and dates make content more trustworthy to people and to the systems that rank it. Update the "last updated" date only when you actually update the page.
7. Get mentioned where answers are sourced
AI assistants lean on sources they already trust: reputable publications, industry roundups, Reddit and LinkedIn discussions, YouTube. Guest posts, podcast appearances and helpful community answers all count.
Where video fits
Video is the most underused AEO asset. A single well-scripted video gives you a YouTube result, a transcript full of plain-language answers, short clips for social feeds and a reason for other sites to link to you. Script it from the same question your article answers, and the two reinforce each other.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AI answer engines still rely heavily on pages that search engines can crawl and trust, so strong SEO is the foundation AEO builds on.
How long does AEO take to work?
New pages can be picked up by AI search within days of being crawled, but consistent citations usually take a few months of publishing focused answers and earning mentions.
Can I track AEO results?
Partly. Look for referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar sites in Google Analytics, and test your key questions in each assistant every month to see who gets cited.
